🔱 Mundan Sanskar

Mundan Sanskar

Manusmriti: Maharishi Manu has described in his book that the Mundan Sanskar of a child must be performed in the first, third and fifth year.

Grihyasutra: Detailed description of the Chudakarma Sanskar is found in Grihyasutra (such as Ashvalayana, Paraskar) composed by various sages. These describe the process of chanting mantras and invoking the gods.

Atharvaveda: The process of hair cutting and mantras are also mentioned in Atharvaveda, which shows its antiquity.

Mundan Sanskar is the process of removing the hair of the child's head with rituals. It does not only mean cutting the hair; This is a sacred act which is performed with the chanting of religious mantras and havan.
This sanskar is a religious and classical ritual of removing the hair of the child for the first time in the years after his birth. Through this sanskar, the innate impurities are removed from the body of the child and he is blessed to start a new clean life.

It is believed that the hair on the head of the child is impure while in the womb. By removing these impure hairs through the mundan sanskar, the body and mind of the child are purified.

Protection from evil eye and negative energy: It is believed that this sanskar removes the possible evil eye (nazar dosh) on the child and provides him protection from negative energies.

Wishing for long life and health: By performing this sanskar, prayers are offered for the long life and good health of the child. Through mantras, the gods are wished for his happy future.

Thanks to the Creator: This sanskar is a way of expressing gratitude to God and nature, who gave birth to the baby and helped in its development.

Health of the scalp: The hair at birth is soft and tender, which can accumulate dust, sweat and dirt. Removing them cleans the scalp and encourages the growth of new, strong and healthy hair.

It is believed that removing hair improves blood circulation in the scalp, which provides more oxygen to the brain cells. This can have a direct positive effect on the mental development and intellectual ability of the child.

Physical hygiene: The baby's head is delicate and sometimes problems like cradle cap (a type of skin condition) occur on it. Getting the head shaved helps in getting rid of such problems.

Mundan Sanskar is a lively and scientific tradition of Hindu culture. It is not only a religious ritual but also an important step in terms of better physical and mental development of the child. It provides the child with a new, clean and auspicious beginning, making his/her future bright and prosperous.
