Tirtha Shradh Puja in Haridwar

In Hinduism, Pitra Rin is considered one of the biggest debts. Shradha Karma puja is performed to repay the biggest Pitra Rin. When this Shradha Karma is performed at a holy pilgrimage site, it is referred to as 'Tirtha Shradha pooja'. It is considered to be a great and fruitful way to provide peace and salvation to the ancestors. The word 'Shraddha' has originated from 'Shraddhaya', i.e., 'Shraddha'. In these Vedic pooja rituals, such as Pinda Daan, Tarpan, and Havan, are performed with proper puja rituals; some people also refer to it as Tirtha Shraddha or Shraddha Utthan.

'Tirtha' means holy water or holy place. It is believed that the gods are present at pilgrimage places, and the atmosphere there is extremely holy and divine. According to astrology and theology, even after the death of a man, some of his desires or attachments remain, due to which he does not get salvation, and he keeps wandering in Pitriloka. The Shradh Karma performed at the pilgrimage site helps to satisfy the souls of those ancestors and provide them with salvation. Due to the sanctity of the pilgrimage and the power of mantras, their virtue and effect increase manifold.

Freedom from Pitri Debt: It is believed that our ancestors have given us this life and have made many sacrifices for us. Performing Shradh at the pilgrimage site liberates them from this debt, and their soul find peace.

Peace of Pitri Dosh: According to astrology, if there is Pitri Dosh in the horoscope, then the person has to face many difficulties in life, such as obstacles in the happiness of children, financial loss, hindrance in business, etc. It is believed that this dosha occurs due to the insult of ancestors, their unsatisfied desires, or misbehavior towards them. Performing Shradh at a holy place like Tirtha reduces the intensity of this dosha and also improves the inauspicious effects of the horoscope.

Helpful in attaining salvation: The ancestors are satisfied with the Shradh performed at a normal place, but the Shradh performed at Tirtha gives them Moksha (liberation). The sanctity of the Tirtha washes away all the sins of the ancestors, and they attain the divine world.

It is believed that satisfied ancestors are always happy with their family and bless them. This maintains happiness, peace, prosperity, and harmony in the family. The blessings of the ancestors are considered helpful in getting children, freedom from diseases, and success.

Performing Tirtha Shradh not only gives many benefits to the ancestors but also to the living person:

🔸 Spiritual peace: Performing the duty towards one's ancestors gives deep peace and satisfaction to the mind.

🔸 Blessings of ancestors: Satisfied ancestors remove the obstacles in the lives of their descendants and give them success.

🔸 Destruction of negative energy: The holy land of the pilgrimage and the sacred mantras of the Shraddha Karma remove negative energy and evil forces.

🔸 Auspicious results of deeds: The virtuous deeds performed at a holy place are extremely fruitful, which yield pleasant results in the current and future births as well.

🔸 Social unity: All the members of the family come together in the Shraddha Karma, which strengthens family and social unity.

Major places of pilgrimage, Shraddha:

There are many pilgrimage places in India where performing Shraddha Karma is considered extremely fruitful. Some of these are:

1. Gaya, Bihar: Gaya is considered the most important and sacred place of Shradha Karma. Here, performing Pind Daan on the banks of the Falgu River has special significance. There is a mythological belief that Lord Vishnu performed a Yagya on the body of Gayasur here and declared that by performing Shraddha here, the ancestors would attain salvation. Here, the fruit of one Pind Daan is considered equal to the Pind Daan of many births.

2. Kashi (Varanasi), Uttar Pradesh: It is believed that Lord Shiva himself is present in Kashi, and by sacrificing one's life here, one attains salvation. Similarly, by performing Shraddha here, the ancestors attain salvation directly. Performing tarpan on the banks of the Ganga here is very virtuous.

3. Prayagraj (Allahabad), Uttar Pradesh: Performing Shraddha at Triveni Sangam (confluence of Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati) is very fruitful. Performing Shraddha here on Magh Mela and other special occasions has special significance.

4. Haridwar (Uttarakhand): Haridwar, situated on the banks of the river Ganga, is another major pilgrimage site. By performing Shraddha at Har ki Pauri, Narayan Shila Temple, Pretshila mandir, Ganga bank here, ancestors attain Akshaya Punya.
