Narayan Bali Puja

Narayan Bali Puja is the way to calm the dosha of untimely death and attain spiritual peace

In Hindu scriptures, death is considered an inevitable and natural part of life. There are elaborate rituals prescribed for this, which are followed to help the soul of a person attain peace and salvation. But when the death is untimely, unnatural or accidental, it is considered a 'dosha' or 'inauspicious' situation. It is believed that the soul suffering from such a death remains unsatisfied and wandering, which can have ill effects on the family and descendants. Narayan Bali Puja has been prescribed to calm this 'Akaal Mrityu Dosha' and to give salvation to that soul.

'Narayana' is a name of Lord Vishnu, who is the nurturer and protector, and 'bali' means 'offering' or 'offering'. Thus, Narayan Bali literally means 'offering to Lord Narayana'. This is a powerful ritual in which special prasad (balls made of rice flour etc.) is offered to Lord Vishnu by worshipping him, so that the soul of the untimely deceased can be prayed to for peace.

Narayan Bali is required in the following circumstances:

1. Untimely Death: When a person dies suddenly due to accident, suicide, murder, drowning, burning, poisoning or any serious accident.

2. Irregular funeral: If after someone's death, his funeral has not been done properly or his ashes have not been immersed in the river.

3. Suspicion of Pitra Dosh: There is a continuous series of failures, diseases, financial crisis, or accidents in the family, which is believed to be caused by Pitra Dosh (unsatisfied souls of ancestors).

4. Disturbance in dreams: If the family members repeatedly see the deceased person sad, scared or in pain in their dreams.

It is believed that under these circumstances, the soul of the deceased keeps wandering in 'pret yoni' and is unable to attain salvation. The unrest of this wandering soul can have a negative impact on his family. The purpose of Narayan Bali is to liberate this soul with the grace of Lord Vishnu and free the family from this dosha.

Method of Narayan Bali

Narayan Bali is a complex Vedic ritual, which should be performed only under the guidance of a learned and experienced Brahmin (priest).

· At the beginning of the ritual, the performer takes a resolution. He tells his name, gotra and the name gotra of the deceased person for whose peace this ritual is being performed. Also, its purpose is said to be the peace of Pitra Dosha.

This is the most specific and important action of this ritual. Many balls are made by mixing rice flour with ghee, milk, honey, water etc.

· Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva, Brahma, Yama, Pret and other gods are invoked and worshipped as per the rituals.

· Further, offerings are made in the havan kund with chanting of mantras. Narayan Bali is worshipped with special mantras.

Although Narayan Bali can be performed anywhere, some places are considered especially auspicious and fruitful for it:

1. Gaya, Bihar: Gaya is the supreme place for Pitra Karma. Here, Narayan Bali is performed at the Vishnupad temple on the banks of the Falgu river and has special significance. It is believed that the ritual performed here reaches Lord Vishnu directly.

2. Haridwar, Uttarakhand: Performing Narayan Bali in this holy city situated on the banks of the Ganga is considered extremely virtuous.

3. Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh: Performing this ritual at the Triveni Sangam yields special results.

4. Kashi (Varanasi), Uttar Pradesh: Performing this ritual in Kashi, the city of salvation, gives quick liberation to the soul.

· Premature death creates an imbalance. Narayan Bali is a means of reestablishing that balance, through the power of Lord Vishnu. It is a way of introducing the soul into the cosmic justice system. Sudden and painful death of a loved one leaves a deep trauma, guilt and incompleteness in the minds of the family members. The reverential ritual of Narayan Bali gives them a positive and active way out of this grief. It acts as a bridge between the living and the dead, providing mental peace to the family and divine salvation to the soul. Thus, Narayan Bali Puja is a source of hope and peace in the most difficult times of human life.
